Good progress but be aware of deadline

Apart from H who will be making the practical work at BHS all students are progressing practical work at BGS. Progress is picking up and outcomes are developing. Good steady progress then so far. However the deadline is Easter for all practical work. Folios need to be handed in immediately after Easter.
We like P's work - substantial unit - will need a lot of time to apply a finish which justifies the effort put in. Should be okay.
We like the vertigious corner unit from Mx. Similar comments to P above.
We like the chair. A catnap chair. Must get on with this C but I think again as above we will be alright.
We are excited by the re-assessment from D - interesting storage / occasional table.

Good to see practical work commencing

It is always good to actually start cutting the wood / plastic for our models. Remember to always measure twice and cut once - in other words check and check again before committing yourselves. All students progressing well - but please remember to keep your portfolios up to date. Photograph your work as it progresses as much as possible.

Materials will need ordering asap post half term

We need to order materials. Natt - wherever you are make sure you understand and plan what is needed for your practical ( how much 9mm plywood?)
The rest of you are aware - however you will all need to PLAN and produce a cutting list. I suggest that this is indicated to scale on a sketch which should be placed in your folio. Do not forget about the blade width of the saw - adjust your sizes if necessary.
Thanks to those who have engaged with our guest engineer - he is impressed by you all and provides us with another view.

Today we established project titles for all to progress.
DN to examine a portable? / movable adjustable projector stand to include storage.
CG to look at seating to include a space for storage - specifically a cat !! A catnap chair.
PA an unusual table which could be modular / asymmetric with storage.
Hy to look into a themed lighting display /lampshades.
NP to consider a stackable chair.
MM to investigate corner unit which is freestanding including storage.
ALL PROJECTS NEED TO BE RESEARCHED AND SPECIFIED BEFORE THE END OF TERM.
IN OTHER WORDS COMPLETE SECTION ONE OF THE MARK SCHEME.
This will allow everyone to put in the required time for their Product Studies. These sound very interesting and we look forward to reading them. Remember that they MUST be your OWN words. Mrs.Colley will lead you through this unit.

Basically the outline is as follows.
UNIT 1 jointly taught at both sites until November.
UNIT 2 - one project from both schools ( portfolio approach ) finish in March 09

Changes to the group for A2

Best wishes to Eddie for the future - he has decided to drop our subject for A2.
Not officially heard from TM or CB.
Everyone else is moving on to A2.
At an earlier meeting with BHS we decided the following
BHS to deliver the product study UNIT 4
BGS to deliver the practical element UNIT 5 with folio support from BHS
Joint delivery of UNIT 6 - the final 3 hour examination.

UNIT 2 Marks sent off - minus two students

It is a shame to say that regardless of all the help and support they have had over the year, I am afraid both Tom and ChrisB have not submitted any work.

Some students have not used the mark scheme properly and have thus dropped marks - particularly annoying because the late presentation of folios limited the ability to improve the folios.

Also, for next year I would lke to see a general improvement in grammar and written content.

To everyone else - well done. Especially Holly, ChrisG, Phil, Max, Eddie and Natt.
Well done particularly to Eddie for completing practical work.

Just remains to wish you all the best in the unit 3 exam.

If you need to contact me please feel free to do so, but above all do not worry, everyone will be fine. Remember that word " because " and make sure you have all your graphic needs especially coloured pencils NOT FELT TIPS.

Be prepared as we will produce reference work, questions and answers which need to be learnt.

Submit your folio

Hello all
You need to submit your folio to me over the next two eeks. I need to send off the marks to the exam board during the third week.
I appreciate the rush you have had to complete the coursework - inevitable due to the last minute re-arranged plan for the year combined with the shorter lesson time. With this in mind can I suggest you submit your best responses from either of the 3 projects to make up your final design folio. Evidence in the form of your 3D practical work which is referred to in your folio MUST be available for when the moderator visits the school.
As a reminder,
You have - hopefully 3 outcomes

At the worst you can submit a folio which details just one of the above - but remember, it must hit all 5 marking criteria.

UNIT 1 results

Well done everyone. Grade A onwards - best results ever. Both I and Mr Bull congratulate you. Well done especially to Holly who gained full marks. We need to concentrate on our unit 2 coursework now and get our practical work done. We must not neglect our folio work - remember to record your work photographically at all stages.
Well done again ... made an old man pround. (:o)

Sorry to mention I am away on Monday.
Please turn up to at least progress your folios. Clive will help with some aspects of cutting wood. If you have not gathered photos of you models consider taking some. Dan - you really need to redesign - aim for simplicity build in success not uncertainty. Eddie, be patient we will fix battens to your chair but need to review structural integrity. Holly are you certain about everything, be clear in your mind about what you want to do - it could still easily be a slotted knockdown assembly. Phil your design seems okay. Max, I like your modified design a lot - no problems there. Chris, we will need to be aware of the tendency for lateral movement - consider bracing possibilities, even fabric, wire,rope etc ( Velcro ). Tom focus more remember to be certain of your design. All students prioritise making to be complete by breaking up for Easter. Folios handed in after Easter.

Hello everyone, I will not be at school for the period 5 lesson as I am away at a meeting. I have emailed you all with instructions. Briefly, some of you need to consider barrel joint fixings - these can be used to help fix your furniture parts together - examples in glazed storage cupboard in cooridor outside room T1. See Clive and he will open the cupboard for you to view. Also, just bought more knock down fittings which could be helpful. Although as you have researched these for your folio you may find them irrelevant (:o)

When back after half term

We need to make all our practical outcomes by the time we break up for Easter - we can do this - and we will, I am sure, enjoy this period. However - remember to constantly photograph your work as it proceeds so the images can be used to show your progress and to help with evaluation etc etc. Easter will be busy for us all as we need to complete our design folios. Gant charts will be required to show your planning - I can give you a blank layout with dates if required.

Models of furniture design need photographing as evidence for your folios and we need to begin making soon. So next lesson we need to mark out our design on the wood for cutting. JG
